The controls on the DS are similar to the Gameboy and the GBA (Game boy advance) There is a directional pad, and a and B button, an X and Y button. Standard nintendo controls. There are also toggels at the top L and R buttons. It doesnt have an analog dongle, but that is fine; the stylus is much better. It also has a start and select button on the DS.
